The Rev. Dr. John W. Yates, II - Rector

The Rev. Dr. John W. Yates, II John

Rector

John Yates is Rector of The Falls Church Anglican, where he has been serving since 1979. The Falls Church was established by English settlers as an Anglican church, its leaders were instrumental in the development of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States in the late 1700s. But in 2006, the members of the church voted overwhelmingly to leave the Episcopal Church and have been deeply involved in the establishment of the new Anglican Church of North America. This church of around 4,000 active members is well known for training young pastors, planting daughter churches, biblical preaching, a strong focus on family life, vibrant worship, outstanding youth ministry.

John is married to Susan Alexander Yates. They have five adult children and 21 grandchildren. Susan is well known for her many books on family life and as a speaker and teacher. John has written a number of books as well.

John has been an instrumental figure in the Anglican renewal movement here in the U.S. over the last several decades. He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, graduating in 1968, Phi Beta Kappa and a Morehead scholar. He received his Masters of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1971, and in 1984 earned a Doctorate of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary. His work over the years with Christian young people and young families has especially equipped him as a spokesman on family life. He and his wife are deeply involved in the Little Rock, Arkansas-based ministry, Family Life, and they speak regularly at Weekend to Remember conferences around the country.

The Rev. E. Kathleen Christopher - Assistant Rector, Director-Healing & Prayer

The Rev. E. Kathleen Christopher Kathleen

Assistant Rector, Director-Healing & Prayer

Kathleen Christopher was born and raised in Chattanooga, TN, but calls Northern Virginia “home,” having lived here since graduate school. Kathleen’s original field of study was archaeology: she received a BA in classical languages from St. Louis University, followed by a Master’s degree in archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania. Kathleen served as Reference Archivist for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Anthropological Archives for ten years, working especially with visiting Native Americans and the records of their history and culture. Although she was raised in the church, Kathleen had departed from the Christian faith for many years when the Lord revealed himself to her in a life-changing way, and called her to ordained ministry. Since graduating from VTS in 2000, Kathleen has served with a number of area churches, most recently as Acting Vicar of Christ the Redeemer, Centreville. Kathleen has a special calling in the area of healing ministries, and has received extensive training and experience in that field. She has recently established a non-profit Christian ministry called HealingWay Ministries, which works to bring healing, strengthening, and renewal to churches, groups, and individuals seeking to live into the fullness of God’s vision for their lives. A unique application of that ministry will be to churches and leadership groups who have been affected by the realignment currently taking place in the Anglican Communion. Kathleen also has a heart for missions, and has done mission work in South Dakota (Pine Ridge Indian Reservation) and Africa (Kenya/Uganda).

Kathleen lives in Alexandria with her two cats, Sasha and Kaya. Her greatest joy in life are her children: Erin, 26, who lives in Canada with her husband and their 5-year old son; and her son Brendan, 23, just graduating from Syracuse University and moving to Baltimore to teach in the public school system.

Having faced many challenges in her life, Kathleen’s signature Bible verse is Rms 8:28: God uses all things for the good of those who love Him, and who are called according to His purpose.

The Rev. Dean Miller Dean

Director, Spiritual Formation & Discipleship

Dean Miller was born in Washington, D.C. and then grew up in Southern California where he attended Claremont McKenna College and Azusa Pacific University. His dominant loves growing up were soccer, any other sport, and reading. He then spent fourteen months working in business before heading to Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia for seminary. At Regent his dominant loves were his girlfriend (now wife) Mary Ellen, his seminary classes, soccer and any other sport. Dean graduated from Regent in 1999 and was the Board of Governor’s Recipient in Proficiency for the Master of Divinity degree. Shortly thereafter Dean and Mary Ellen married. He joined the staff of The Falls Church in the fall of 2005 as the Director of Kairos, then the young adult ministry, and has been the Director of the new Spiritual Formation and Discipleship department since its creation in the spring of 2010. Susan Fertig-Dykes - Communications Program Manager

Susan Fertig-Dykes Susan

Communications Program Manager

Firmly committed to orthodox Christianity and the Anglican church as represented by The Falls Church Anglican, I was nonetheless a cradle Episcopalian who attended an Episcopal school in the Philippines until graduating from high school, when I came to the United States to attend college. I married George Middleton Dykes, III, in 1965, and his job immediately took us to Panama. We spent most of a decade in Latin America, and our sons George and Dirk were both born in Puerto Rico. We lived in Mexico, Nicaragua, and Venezuela before returning to the U.S. When we moved to Virginia in 1983, we joined Christ Church in Alexandria, where we remained members until, because of doctrinal issues, we transferred to The Falls Church in 2004, a year before my husband of 40 years died. TFC has been my lifeline ever since.

Perhaps because of the way I came into the world, I have always known that the Lord is in charge. My parents set off for the Philippines in 1936, shortly after they were married in Colorado, and remained for more than 30 years. My father was a mining engineer, but also a Reserve Officer in the U.S. Army called into active duty when Japan invaded in 1941. When the American troops retreated into the mountains on the island of Panay, my mother fled into the jungle with a group of Baptist missionaries. Later, my father did not surrender and instead formed a guerrilla unit on the island. Three weeks before I was born in 1944, the Japanese found the Baptist missionaries and killed them all, including children. My mother and another mining wife narrowly escaped, rejoined my father, and remained on the run before and after my birth, successfully evading capture until evacuation by submarine three months later. We returned to the Philippines right after the war ended, and I grew up in Baguio City, in the mountains north of Manila. There was no earthly reason we should have survived the war. I always was keenly aware of the sacrifices of others to keep us alive – Filipinos gave their lives saving us. I grew up knowing I had the burden of those lives quietly urging me to find a way to give something back to the world in Christ's name.

I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom during my children’s early years. But volunteer work and church activities kept my professional skills honed, and transition back to the workforce later was not difficult. When we moved to Kansas City in 1981, our two sons were old enough for me to go back and finish my undergraduate degree in communications at University of Missouri, and the whole family supported me, helping with cooking and chores so I could get school assignments done and do freelance work for local cable companies. I then joined KSHB-TV, a Scripps-Howard super station, as Public Service Director.

Since then, I’ve held appointments in the Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43 Administrations. At the Veterans Administration I was director of Broadcast Service and, in addition to dozens of public service announcements, produced 17 one-hour TV programs, Medical AdVAnces, distributed nationally through cable networks. After that I ran my own production company for three years before going on staff at the Bicentennial Presidential Inaugural Committee in 1988 as director of media information. In 1989 I was appointed to USDA as director of publishing and visual communication, where I served in the Senior Executive Service until the end of the Administration. Recently, I have spent the last six years at USAID leading a team of democracy and governance specialists working in Europe and Eurasia in 20 former communist countries from the Balkans to Russia to Central Asia. I completed my MPA from Norwich University, cum laude, while working full time, and now serve on the university's Board of Fellows, advising on academic programs for the College of Graduate Studies.

In between Bush 41 and Bush 43, my husband and I spent six years in the Balkans during and after the Bosnian conflict. From 1993-1997 I established and managed branches of the Institute of Cultural Affairs (an international civil society NGO) in Croatia and Bosnia, facilitating and training facilitators in inter-ethnic/inter-religious consensus building. In 1997 I joined World Vision to set up a civil society program and manage their human resources. World Vision brought me to the U.S. where I served as their international recruiter from 1999-2002 when I left to accept the position at USAID.

During my time in Bosnia and Croatia, I was a presenter at civil society and development conferences in Egypt (1996) and Japan (1995), was an official observer delegate at the UN Women’s Conference in Beijing (1995) and led a workshop at the concurrent NGO “Shadow Conference” in Huai Roo. I authored a chapter on civil society in Croatia and Bosnia for Beyond Prince and Merchant: The Rise of Civil Society in the 20th Century, a book published by ICA and PACT in 1997 and reprinted several times since. I helped coordinate a 1993 USIS conference on “The Role of the Media in a Democracy” for 80 Croatian journalists, and scheduled notable women political figures (including former Vice Presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro) for World Net broadcasts linking with the US from Zagreb. In 1994, I coordinated a USIS conference for leaders of all registered Croatian parties. From 1993-1995, I worked intermittently for Hrvatska Radio-Televizia (HRT), providing English dubbing for dozens of documentaries and a variety of children’s programs and also consulted for Jadran Films.

I am thrilled to be on staff at The Falls Church--it is a dream come true. I would love to hear from you how we can make communications at TFC best meet the needs of the congregation and best represent our church to the community and the world beyond.

Bill Deiss - Administrator

Bill Deiss Bill

Administrator

Bill started life’s trail in suburban Philadelphia, Pa., as the oldest of three sons. He prepared at William Penn Charter, a Quaker school, and received a BSE degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton University. After college, he worked in the space program with General Electric and continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Toledo, earning a combined master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Business Administration. That degree led him to positions in corporate planning, mergers and acquisitions, division financial controller, and international management with Owens-Illinois, Inc., in Toledo, Ohio, where he held a nine-year assignment expanding and overseeing their manufacturing/trading operations in Asia. He also was Vice-Chairman of the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Governors of the United World College of South East Asia.

Moving from SE Asia to Washington, DC, in 1984, Bill began attending The Falls Church with his two sons; he was then a single parent. Soon he met Nancy, also a single parent with two children. They were married at TFC and for the next two years, the family lived in Los Angeles where Bill was the Vice-President for North America of an international trading company. They returned to Virginia and The Falls Church in 1987.

Because of his desire to take the Word into the world, Bill has long been involved with TFC outreach ministries, especially in Kazakhstan, at the SE White House and DC Partnership. Additionally, he served on the Vestry during the construction of the main (new) sanctuary, started the Personnel Committee, and administered the startup of The Falls Church Fellows Program. In addition to managing church financial operations, human resources, facilities and Vestry support, he continues to oversee all TFC mission work and spiritual formation and discipleship ministries. He serves as Chairman of the Trustees for the Anglican Relief and Development Fund associated with the Anglican Church of North American located in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. He also serves on the non-profit organization - Peregrine Group’s Board of Directors.

Rheta Guse

Database Administrator

I grew up in the Finger Lakes region of New York State on a dirt road with 100 acres of land. Moving to Northern Virginia in 2008 required some adjustment (especially understanding why it takes more than an hour sometimes to drive only 7 miles). In that same year I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Political Science/International Relations via eCampus at Troy University.

My previous employment was with a national nonprofit in Washington, DC where I worked as a Development Assistant.
I know that I am called to full-time ministry and was delighted to find a place at The Falls Church Anglican, first as Children’s Ministry Administrative Assistant and now as Database Administrator.

I also serve at my own church, The Journey, as a Kindergarten teacher for Sunday services.
I have a 20 month old daughter, Lydia, and am deeply grateful for the spiritual family that God has given me here in Virginia. I enjoy learning about history and reading when I have spare time. I also enjoy oil painting or doing other various arts and crafts.

The deep desire that God has placed on my heart is for the healing work of the Holy Spirit to be made manifest over Russia. I feel called to mission ministry in Russia and the Far East and am waiting for the Lord’s perfect timing to be made known.

If she had to sum it up, the message she heard Sunday after Sunday growing up in our church would be the following: God loves you and wants to be in relationship with you! Although she heard of God’s salvation in Jesus repeatedly since childhood, it wasn’t until she was in her mid-20s that Jennifer made the commitment to follow Jesus as her Savior and Lord. She was Confirmed at The Falls Church in 1988.

Jennifer earned a degree in History from the College of William and Mary and returned to Northern Virginia after graduation to work in the technical services industry. She began her career as a technical writer and advanced quickly to become Principle at SRA, International, Inc. Her business expertise is in Quality Assurance, Business Process Engineering and Process Improvement. Jennifer held a Top Secret Security Clearance with a Special Background Investigation for most of her time in the defense industry. Although successful and happy in her business career, Jennifer first began to sense God’s call into full-time church leadership in the mid-1990s. She was interviewing at churches around the country when the position in Children’s Ministry at The Falls Church opened up in 2000. She joined the staff of The Falls Church in May of that year and has been ministering to parents, children and leaders in our community ever since.

Jennifer has been active in many capacities in our church family. It is no surprise she taught Sunday School and led Children’s Church as a volunteer before joining the staff, but she has also served on the Vestry and several Vestry Committees; provided leadership to the Saturday session of the Women’s Lenten series; sung in various praise choirs; been active in local outreach initiatives; and led many Bible studies in her home over the years. In addition to her full-time work on staff, Jennifer currently volunteers as a Prayer Minister in TFC’s Healing Ministry.

Jennifer is passionate about children coming to faith in the Lord Jesus and helping parents to minister to their kids. She has taught church leaders both nationally and internationally about reaching children with the Gospel of Christ. Jennifer’s international teaching experience includes conferences in such far-flung places as Russia, Kenya and Sudan. She enjoys the challenges of teaching internationally; however, Jennifer’s great love is ministering in the local church.

Tammy Palusky - CM Sunday Morning Manager

Tammy Palusky

CM Sunday Morning Manager

Tammy Palusky grew up as a missionary kid in the jungles of Peru, and is the youngest of 8 children. Her parents instilled in her the importance of a personal relationship with the Lord, and her older siblings led her to the Lord at a very early age. In her early adulthood, Tammy came to know her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in a fresh new way and to love Him more dearly. She has a heart to see children come to know the great love of Jesus for them, and to see families grow together in their love for Him.
Tammy has spent the past several years living in various places around the globe with her husband Chris, who works for World Vision, and with their two children—Sienna, age 9 and Gavin, age 6. Their family moved to the area last August and first attended TFCA in September. They instantly knew that this would be their church home, and have been enjoying getting settled into the area and into the church community.
Tammy received her undergraduate degree from Georgia State University in Spanish Literature and Education, and has taught Spanish, mostly to middle school and high school age youth, but also to pre-school children. In addition to her teaching experience, Tammy has an eclectic work background, from Executive Assistant and various administrative roles to working with war widows and their children in Kosovo. At All Saints’ International Congregation in Beirut, Lebanon, Tammy briefly volunteered as coordinator of the Children’s Church and Church Administrator before their family once again moved on to another country. They are looking forward to finally putting roots down in an area, and Tammy is very excited about being a part of helping families connect their kids to Jesus at TFCA!

Carolyn Wright - Asst. Director, Nursery

Carolyn Wright Carolyn

Asst. Director, Nursery

Carolyn has been serving the families of nursery-aged children here at TFC since 2004. When she came on board, she brought with her a wealth of first-hand knowledge about parenting, having spent the prior 10 years at home raising her three daughters. Carolyn has a genuine love for very young children, understands the needs of families during these formative years and has a passion to share Christ’s love with them.

She was blessed to have grown up in a home where Christ was loved and worshiped and came to know Him as her Savior when she was 12. Strong biblical teaching and training through churches, youth groups and Inter-Varsity have all contributed to her growth in Christ.

Her work experience previous to parenting was in Human Resources; she has a degree in Communication Studies, with a minor in Spanish, from Northwestern University. She is also an artist, working in water-based media, and she shows and sells her paintings through several venues in the mid-Atlantic region.

Christine Jones - ESOL Coordinator

Christine Jones Christine

ESOL Coordinator

I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. After high school, I went to Duke University where I studied cultural anthropology. There I also met my husband, Andrew Jones. After graduation, I came to Washington to pursue a master’s in museum studies at GWU. While in DC, I worked at various museums including the Decatur House, the Smithsonian Institution and the Textile Museum.

While I was not raised in a Christian home, God had other plans for me and I was led to faith though a series of coincidences that could only be from our Lord! Andrew and I have spent nearly half of our 20 married years living outside of the USA, working in Ecuador, Kenya & Rwanda. While Andrew worked for CARE (the humanitarian organization), God opened a variety of doors for me so that my resume includes volunteering at the Nairobi Museum, teaching English, teaching violin, and working at the Nairobi Museum and the US Embassy (Kigali). Whew! At the time, I had no idea how I would ever use these diverse experiences to further the kingdom of God.

We were called back to the Washington, DC area in 2006, bringing three children whose only experiences with the US were summer vacations with the cousins. Knowing we would be overwhelmed by life in big-city Washington, we quickly settled on finding a home in Falls Church City, close to The Falls Church, which Andrew had attended in the late 1980s. We were going to make The Falls Church our community, whether the Church was ready for us or not!

While our three children, Nate (15), Darcy (13), and Evan (9) quickly adjusted to life in the States, “Mom! You don’t know what Webkinz are?!?” I missed the daily interactions I had had in Africa with people from so many different cultural, economic, and religious backgrounds.

Searching for a role where I could use my intercultural experiences, I began volunteering with the ESOL Ministry. Here I found a fascinating group of students, with whom I could so clearly relate in their daily struggles to live in a foreign culture. When I was asked to coordinate the ESOL program for Kerry Wilson this spring, I was honored. I now feel ready to become a permanent part of the Falls Church staff, coordinating the ESOL movie nights this summer and planning for classes next fall.

When I am not at Church, you can find me chauffeuring the kids to their various activities. If I am lucky, I will be found walking around our neighborhood listening to sermons on my iPod, on the tennis court, or meeting a friend for coffee at Starbucks. I look forward to getting to know more of you and sharing with you the wonderful stories that come out of our Ministry.

Jenny L. Byrne - Seniors Ministry Coordinator

Jenny L. Byrne

Seniors Ministry Coordinator

Jenny Byrne hails from Bristol, Indiana, a tiny town just south of Michigan. She grew up in a quiet, sheltered, Mennonite/Amish community not leaving the tri-state area until after
her senior year in high school.

While attending Taylor University in Indiana she studied for a semester in DC with the American Studies program under the cover of the Christian College Coalition.

Upon graduation from Taylor she moved back to the DC area promptly meeting Jim Byrne. They were married within the year and worked together in youth ministry until starting their family. They are the proud parents of two adult children, Jacob and Joshua.

Until recently, she worked in school fundraising helping PTA’s raise money for educational needs and school projects.

Since moving to Falls Church, Jenny has become an avid gardener, having inherited many flower gardens from the previous owner. While “avid weeder” may be more appropriate, the gardens provide many opportunities to reflect on Gods’ wonderful creation. The scriptures referring to pruning, soil, slugs, and fruit have come alive with new meaning!

She and Jim have experienced immeasurable blessings being part of the congregation and
staff at TFC. The Seniors’ ministry provides Jenny an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ while loving and ministering to the anchors of our church.

The Rev. E. Kathleen Christopher Kathleen

Assistant Rector, Dir. Healing & Prayer

A Southern California native, Betsy left the warm sunshine and the cool ocean breeze to attend Grove City College in Pennsylvania where she initially majored in music education with a concentration in piano. During her sophomore year, she switched majors to history education and discovered her interest in politics. Marti Alderfer - Administrative Assistant

Marti Alderfer Marti

Administrative Assistant

Marti Alderfer grew up as Martha Joy Bontrager, in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY. Her grandfather was an Amish Deacon, chosen by lot, but left the Amish church and started the Alden Mennonite Church where Marti’s family were members. During Marti’s initial high school years, her church Youth Group experienced a spiritual revival which brought revival to the greater congregation – this had a profound effect on her life. For her junior and senior years of High School, Marti boarded with a Mennonite family in Harleysville, PA and attended Christopher Dock Mennonite High School, which is where she met her future husband, Ken Alderfer. She went to Eastern Mennonite College for 1 year before attending school for practical nursing, back in New York State.

Marti and Ken married in 1978 and lived in Harrisonburg, VA. Marti worked as Head Nurse and Office Manager for an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist while Ken worked as a CPA and then attended Law School at University of Virginia. When Ken graduated they moved to Richmond, VA and Marti returned to school at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Business Management while also working part-time for a group of Ear, Nose and Throat Physicians. However, Ken changed positions after one year and they moved to the Washington DC area in 1987. Marti returned to work in DC for another large Ear, Nose and Throat practice. They became members of Washington Community Fellowship, a congregation affiliated with the Mennonite Church. Their first child, Caitlin, was born in 1989 and Marti decreased her paid working hours to part-time. After Lucas was born in 1992, Marti happily became a full-time, stay-at-home Mom! Their last child, Rachel was born in 1995. When Caitlin began school at Rivendell, they heard about the day school at The Falls Church and enrolled Lucas and then Rachel there. This was Marti’s 1st introduction to The Falls Church. Eventually, at the invitation of their friends, all 3 children began attending Crossroads and Cornerstone at The Falls Church. Meanwhile, Marti and Ken started attending Cherrydale Baptist Church, which is only 5 minutes from their home. Marti volunteered weekly in the Rivendell School office.

In anticipation of their 2nd child going to college, Marti decided to return to work. She ruled out returning to nursing after being out of the field for so long. She heard about a possible job opening for an Administrative Assistant in the Youth Ministry Office of The Falls Church. Having a strong conviction from her own personal experience about the profound impact that Youth Ministry can have in one’s life, she contacted Jim Byrne.
The rest is history!

He believes that under the leadership of Jim Byrne this program will provide him with the tools and the strategy for this mission. Simon Dixon - Director

Simon Dixon Simon

Director

Simon Dixon serves as the Director of Music and Worship. He and his wife, Caryn, have recently joined TFC from the UK .

Simon grew up in the Anglican Church tradition and gained a music degree and MA at the Guildhall School of Music and the City of London University in organ, piano, french horn, voice, orchestration and conducting. Lindi Jenkins - Assistant Director

Lindi Jenkins

Assistant Director

Lindi Jenkins has just joined the Worship and Music Department. She was previously with the Children’s Ministry staff as Preschool Coordinator.

Lindi grew up in Luray and recently moved back to Northern Virginia from South Carolina where she and her husband spent 3 years. In South Carolina she served at Ebenezer Baptist Church as Music/Youth/Children’s Director. She holds her Bachelor’s degree in Music from George Mason University and studied Music Therapy at Charleston Southern University.

Lindi was blessed to have been brought up in a Christian home and came to know Jesus as her Savior at 5 years of age. She has been serving in church ministry since she was 10 years old and ministry is something she holds dear. She loves Jesus and loves sharing His love with others.
Lindi grew up on a family farm in Luray. Aside from music, cattle and Christmas trees are what Lindi knows best (And chickens. She had 14 chickens in her backyard while living in SC). Lindi and her husband, Chris, met at their church in Luray, VA. They served on the church’s Praise and Worship Team together in high school, became best of friends, and 4 years later were married.

Lindi and Chris welcomed the birth of their first baby, Nellie, last December. Nellie is a happy baby girl with a sweet smile who already has lots (and lots) of energy. Lindi enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, making music, gardening, and being active outdoors. She’s also a certified Spin instructor. Her husband, Chris, teaches music at St. Mark School in Vienna. He recently graduated from the University of South Carolina with his Master’s in Classical Guitar Performance.

Lindi and Chris both are excited about being part of the TFC family, and serving Him however they can.
