Emily Davis: The Soul Felt Its Worth

Transcript

One of the biggest things that really reinforces the Incarnation to me is holding a newborn. My husband and I have seven children, including newborn twins. And every time we have a baby in the house around Christmas time, it just reminds me so much of the value and preciousness of life to God. It reminds me of our frailty and our dependence on God and our helplessness, but also of the fact that we are eternal, we have eternal souls. And the fact that this is how Jesus came to Earth to begin his earthly ministry, I find that really profound.

My favorite Christmas Carol is, “O Holy Night.” And I think it's interesting from a musical perspective because the melody line is really beautiful and the way it interacts with the dynamics is really unique. And I also think that it lends itself easily to a lot of musical styles. You've seen a lot of artists over the years do that song in a lot of different ways. And I think the lyrics are really profound, especially the line that goes, "Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared and the soul felt its worth, the thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks, a new and glorious morn." And I just think that's a really beautiful and poetic way of expressing the emotions behind how the gospel makes us feel.
