Their Lifestyle: Acts 4:32-37

Discussion Questions

In 4:29, we see the church corporately acknowledge their need for help to God, and in verses 34-35 we see that the believers must have acknowledged their needs to one another in order to receive anything. Paul quotes Jesus in Acts 20:33-35, saying, "It is more blessed to give than to receive," and Paul mentions his own lifestyle. Why is giving more blessed? What does this passage in chapter 4 teach us about dependence on God and others?

Reading ahead to the story of Ananias and Sapphira in 5:1-16, especially 5:4, what can we learn about God's desires for the motives behind our generosity? Contrast Barnabas' generosity with the generosity of Ananias and Sapphira. Why do you think the text says in 5:11 that "great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard," and in 5:13 that, "none of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem"? What could this suggest about the atmosphere of the church prior to Ananias and Sapphira’s sin?

What characteristics describe the fellowship of the church in 4:32-37? In your small group or with a close friend, consider if there is one practical step you could take to allow the Holy Spirit to work in new ways through your time and resources.

What do we learn about kingdom, witness and community? What is your testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus? See 4:33.
