HOMESTRETCH

Homestretch is a local nonprofit organization seeking to empower homeless families with children under the age of 18 in Virginia to attain permanent housing and self-sufficiency by giving them the skills, knowledge, and hope they need to become productive participants in the community. Homestretch does this by providing transitional housing and holistic services for homeless families. TCFA sponsors 2 of the 50 families currently participating in the Homestretch program. Sacred Homes is a partnership program that connects faith communities directly to individual families working to propel themselves out of poverty. This connection is made possible by the faith community “adopting” a Homestretch home and assisting the resident family on their journey to self-sufficiency. A family typically stays in their Homestretch home for two years before moving into a home they can afford on their own. In a Sacred Homes partnership, the faith community partners through giving of time, talent and treasure. TFCA defrays the financial costs housing expenses. We also engage in hands-on support to help maintain the home and, to the extent desired by the family and in close coordination with the assigned Homestretch case manager, also provide additional direct assistance for the resident family. Congregants can also offer any professional skills and services they may possess for their benefit. There are a variety of ways for anyone to engage, especially through sponsoring of the 2 families’ seasonal needs throughout the year. If interested, please contact Brian Scholl.

Get involved

Sacred Home Christmas Gifts - Homestretch asks TFCA to support their two Sacred Homes by providing Christmas gifts for each member of the family. Homestretch provides their specific wish lists on Amazon or Target and asks that TFCA provides at least two things off of each member’s list.

Operation Backpack - Help the children of our adopted families start the school year off right by providing the supplies they need to succeed academically. A detailed list of supplies needed will be provided by Homestretch for each student in advance of the school year.

Seasonal Clothing Needs - Changes in weather can be particularly burdensome for homeless parents and their children. They can be overexposed to the elements and have higher health risks then the general population. Help keep them safe and healthy by participating in providing new clothing for the spring and winter.

Volunteer at an Event - Homestretch hosts several events to elevate the quality of life for families in the program. Help staff an event or plan your own! TFCA has hosted our Holidays Shopping Spree party, Bowling Night, and more.

Dirty Hands Projects - If you want to volunteer as a group, roll up your sleeves and sign up to complete a project for Homestretch. These can include gardening, painting, moving furniture, cleaning, and more.
